Ray Loveday was the author of Hikey Sprites: Twilight of a Northern Tradition. A Swaffham native, Loveday began researching the spirits (a particular branch of Norfolk fairy folklore) in 2008, primarily through oral interviews with individuals raised in the area. His collection was donated to the Folklore Library and Archive by his executors in 2022.
Scope and Contents of the Collection: Collection consists of field research notes, correspondence, clippings, drawings, and related records concerning the hikey sprites, collected by Ray Loveday, dated 1976, 1984, 2008-2019, and undated, bulk 2008-2019. Notes include maps of hikey sprites locations and the Norfolk area, charts of hikey sprites name variations, and magazine and newspaper clippings regarding the hikey sprites. Correspondents primarily are from the Norfolk area and include Moya Leighton of the Adrian Bell Society. Several letters were written in response to a request for information posted in the Adam Bell Society journal. Other correspondence contains requests for Hikey Sprites: Twilight of a Northern Tradition or gratitude for the receipt of one. There are also several drawing by R. Burrell of locations commonly associated with the hikey sprites.
