The Folklore Library & Archive are committed to running research projects to further knowledge, collect materials and contribute to future research in folklore topics. We are currently looking for volunteers who are interested in the following research projects and who would like to offer help. Please use the contact form at the bottom of the page to register your interest and we will be able to give you more details.

TRADITIONAL KNIT AND STITCH

We are running a project to collect and archive traditional stitch samplers from around the world, both historic and modern, along with any supplementary information about particular uses, family or location connections and similar information. This is an ongoing project which will later expand to include other traditional knitting and crochet items.

In the image you can see some of the samplers already created for us based on Cornish Guernsey patterns. This is the kind of physical collection which we are looking to build up. We are interested in hearing from volunteers who would like to offer help with this project by researching stitch patterns and their history, or by knitting samplers based on that research. You can, of course, do both parts!

Volunteers can be anywhere in the world, as we would like this archive to grow to represent all cultures and historical periods over time.

Please contact us using the form at the bottom of this page if you would like to offer volunteer assistance with the Traditional Knit and Stitch project.

'AT RISK' ARCHIVES

Over the years, many vital archives of folklore research and material have been lost from private collections because no provision was made for their archiving after the death of the researcher. The life's work of Barbara Spooner, a Cornish folklore collector, ended up in a skip for example because no instructions had been left and the council cleared her house after she passed away. We would like to prevent such things from happening in the future. If you know such a collector, please put us in touch if you think we can help to give a home to their material in the future.

Please fill in the contact form below to register interest or find out more information in our research projects.
